In Michigan in March 2023, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation expanding the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to include protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Additionally, in January 2025, Michigan updated its hate crime laws to explicitly include both sexual orientation and gender identity or expression, with the law going into effect April 2025.
However, challenges persist. For instance, Michigan Representative Josh Schriver recently expressed intentions to challenge the 2015 Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide, reflecting ongoing debates at both state and federal levels.
